Maniple, Early 10th Century
Description
Maniple of gold thread and red silk on a silk foundation with a silk lining. Embroidered in stem and split stitch, with surface couching in alternate bricking. Depicts a Pope and attendant deacons on either side of the Dextra Dei, with names inscribed. Centre: 'DEXTRA DI'. On one side: 'SCS GREGORIVS PAP, PETRVS DIACONVS'. End panel, obverse: 'JOHANNES B' [John the Baptist]; reverse: 'PIO EPISCOPO PRIDESTANO'. On the other side: 'SCS SYXTVS EPISCP, LAURENTIVS DIACONVS'. End panel, obverse: 'JOHANNES EVG' [John the Evangelist]; reverse: 'AELFFLAED FIERI PRECEPIT'.
